When drilling a series of in-line holes along a dowel, even a slight roll of the dowel misaligns the holes. To simplify the task, I tape the dowel to a guide board the same height as the dowel's diameter as shown in the drawing above. With the guide board held against the fence, the dowel can't rotate.
