I recently needed to remove button plugs while refinishing some chairs. The quickest and cheapest way to do so: Simply drill a small pilot hole in the plug, and then drive a coarse-thread drywall screw into the plug. The twisting force cleanly breaks the plug loose, and the screw provides a good handle for pulling it out.
