Looking for a way to hold carvings while you work on them? Then try this technique: Simply insert the stationary jaw of a one-handed bar clamp between the jaws of a multiposition vise as shown above. Presto, you've got an instant carver's vise. To use this arrangement, you'll need to keep the top and bottom of your carving flat so that the bar clamp can hold it securely.

An ordinary machinist's vise will also work, but the multiposition vise gives you more flexibility in positioning the workpiece.
