Attempting to use a vertical belt sander on miniature parts is difficult—and even dangerous—because of the comparatively wide gap between the edge of the sander's table and the belt.

Clamp an auxiliary top of 1" wood stock or plywood onto the existing table, leaving zero clearance between the sanding belt and the new working surface. This will fully support even miniature workpieces.
