I recently needed a way to hold a router bit for scraping custom molding. So I salvaged the chuck from a discarded cordless drill and attached it to a short length of dowel rod using a 3⁄8 "-24 left-hand-thread (also known as a reverse-thread) bolt. Most hardware stores don't stock that fastener, so try a full-service auto-parts store or online supplier.
