After buying a used and neglected tablesaw, I looked for a way to clean up the rust without scratching the table. I found that a utility-knife blade, held at an angle to the table-top with locking pliers, shaved the rust right off. This simple scraper works well for spilled adhesives, too. Just be sure to replace the blades as they dull.
