Lots of things, including wood scraps, work great for cushioning steel clamp jaws from delicate workpieces. I've found that furniture pads—the thick felt type that self-sticks to the bottom of furniture—the best solution. They cost little, stay in place without help during clamp positioning, and provide plenty of cushion.
