Clamp pads never felt so good

Lots of things, including wood scraps, work great for cushioning steel clamp jaws from delicate workpieces. I’ve found that furniture pads—the thick felt type that self-sticks to the bottom of furniture—the best solution. They cost little, stay in place without help during clamp positioning, and provide plenty of cushion.
