While making boxes, I make the lids oversize for trimming later. Then, by making the box at least 1⁄4 " taller than its final height, ripping the box to its finished dimension creates an ideal template for sizing the lid panel. It also helps me find the most pleasing visual placement for wood grain or any decorative accents.
