Threading a string through a narrow hole on a long dowel or other workpiece often seems impossible. Do you have to drill an oversized hole? No, just soak the first few inches of string in cyanoacrylate glue and give it a shot of accelerator. As soon as the glue dries, you'll have a straight, stiff section of string that you can push through the opening easily.
