Setting Up a Scraper Plane

Power planers and jointers can make a mess of highly figured woods, such as curly maple or lacewood. You can sand those wild-grained woods smooth, but pack a lunch, because it's a long, slow process. Instead, try a scraping plane. In this video, WOOD Magazine Techniques Editor Bob Wilson first shows how to roll the burr that does the cutting, then shows you the secret to setting the blade's cutting depth precisely without a lot of trial and error.
