WOOD magazine review

Stalwart 690 still gets the job done

Review Summary

High Points: Spring-loaded plunge lock is easily reached without removing your hand from the handle and never slipped during our tests. This router features the highest speed setting at 27,000 RPM. Low Points: Without electronic feedback, this router struggles to maintain spindle speed under heavy load: as a result you need to adjust your feed speed. No dust collection available. The variable-speed dial shows only unintuitive “1” through “4” increments.
You need a hex wrench to remove or install the motor in the plunge base. More Points: Both subbase openings fit Porter-Cable’s guide bushings, but you’ll need to buy an optional subbase for larger bits. This router produced a noticeable vibration, but it did not affect its power or cut quality.

Best value for the money

Review Summary

I disagree with the comments mentioned above. This router is a very dependable workhorse. I have had this for a couple of years and I have never had any problems with the router itself. The only problem I have had was with poor router bits. I like have two bases, one plunge cut and one fixed base. The varible speed allows me to control my feed rate. This by far is the best router I have owned to date.

Review Summary

I have two of these, with all three bases. One is dedicated to 1/4 inch bits, and the other is dedicated for the 1/2 inch collet. One of the fixed bases is dedicated to the router table, easy to swap out as needed. I am very happy with the routers. Having all three of the bases is a bonus for me.
