WOOD magazine review

Good handheld plunge router

Review Summary

High Points:  A well-balanced tool with clear bit visibility for handheld routing.
It almost doesn't feel like a 3-hp router, but its power reassure you it is. Low Points:  To use the included 1/4" collet, you must first remove the 1/2" collet from its nut, then install the 1/4" one, a headache we wish DeWalt would avoid by providing separate nut-and-collet assemblies.  The base opening prohibits the use of bits larger than 2-1/2" in diameter.  The speed dial, marked in increments from 1 to 5, requires using a reference chart in the owner’s manual to translate to actual speeds.  Although a good handheld router, this is not a very good choice for table-mounting. More Points:  Although this router plunges smoothly, you must manually engage the plunge-lock lever to stop plunging. It’s a system that’s not as easy to use as the Bosch 1619EVS or Porter-Cable 7539.

Dewalt 625 has power

Review Summary

I have owntedgn this router for 5 years. I only used it handheld until this past year. I built a table and found how good this machine really is. Has plenty of power and electronic control keeps speedst constant. Small woodworkers may find it heavy and feel it torque when starting in handheld mode. Thats not really a problem. This router has THE slickest plung action. Feels like its on ball bearings. Best router I've ever owned. I have 6 others.

Best router still !

Review Summary

I've owned and used this router regularly for probably close to 20 years and it still works beautifully. It's smooth in it's plunge action, powerful and accurate. The high quality of the build is very evident. The soft start is a must for a router of this power. It's actually Swiss made by ELU for Dewalt, at least it was back then, not sure about now.
One of the cool things about this router ,that probably not many people know, is that the chuck is very deep, about three inches. This means if you want to take a very deep plunge cut you can chuck in a router bit of up to six inches in length and it will still clear the base when in it's set at it's highest elevation. This would be a great router for someone doing timber frame work because of the deep collet. I have at least six or seven other routers , and this is by far the best hand held router for heavy duty above the table work. It also performed well as table mounted router for many years as well.
