Review

Offset bases add stability to handheld routers, but Rockler’s Universal Router Base goes a step further by also serving as an adjustable edge guide.
I used the base on several fixed- and plunge-base routers, and it never disappointed. The edge guide attaches in multiple positions, letting you rout up to 5" from a workpiece edge. It has a straight edge for parallel routing and a rounded edge for curved workpieces. The base also comes with an insert that accepts Porter-Cable-style guide bushings, a handy feature. Remove the edge guide and the base works well as an offset base, convenient when routing edge profiles, such as round-overs, coves, and chamfers, on workpieces where the router in its standard base proves awkward or tippy. The clear acrylic base replaces your router’s subbase and comes predrilled for several common routers. It includes mounting screws for easy installation, but did not fit all of my routers. If your router doesn’t fit any of the predrilled holes, simply drill your own. —Tested by Pat Lowry, WOOD Magazine
