The FlatBack tape means the blade lays flat around curves OR flat panels.

FastCap FlatBack Story Pole Tape is the flat foot of tape measures. The flat blade allows the blade to lay flat on a panel and easily measure around curved surfaces. The story pole blade layout allows you to write on the blade with a pencil and then simply wipe off with your finger to rewrite again.

PMS Blade - The PMS features Metric and standard measurements identifying increments down to 1/16" and millimeter.

PSSP Blade - The Story Pole features a blank edge of the blade for writing your notes AND standard measurements on the other edge.

The PS - The PS features Standard measurements that are readable when the tape is extended from either the right or left hand.

PMMR - The Metric/Metric Reverse features metric measurements that are readable when the tape is extended from either the right or left hand.

Add one more tape to your shop for good measure

Review Summary

Over the years, I've accumulated more than my share of retractable tape measures, so it takes something special to make me buy another tape. FastCap’s Pro Carpenter 16' Flatback tape is just such an animal. Although there’s nothing earth-shattering about this tape measure, lots of little things add up to make it really handy. For example, the tape locks with one of two buttons: a temporary catch-and-release button on the bottom of the case, or a more typical sliding lock on the front.
I also like the erasable writing surface on the case where I jot down measurements so I won’t forget them. But the thing that makes the Flatback unusual is the tape itself. Instead of being cupped to make it rigid for long standout, the tape is flat and flexible. That means I don’t have to rock the tape to bring an edge down on a workpiece to mark a dimension accurately. And it means I can measure curved surfaces precisely without the tape buckling in the middle. (Downside: The tape has no standout at all, drooping immediately as it comes out of the case). The face of the flexible tape has a blank writing area along one edge for using it like a story stick. So, instead of having to remember that the hinges on the cabinets need to be 3-5/16" from the bottom of the door, I just pencil a mark at 3-5/16" on the tape surface and write “bottom hinge.” The marks erase easily. And, did I mention the built-in pencil sharpener? Many of the features on the Flatback are found on other FastCap tapes as well. Check the company’s Web site to find the model with the features you want. —Tested by Dean Fiene

Too limp!

Review Summary

I have numerous tapes from this manufacturer. This tape I rarely use. The limp tape may be handy for measuring circumferences, but I rarely, if ever, do that. The limp tape is otherwise a nuisance. Also, with the ProCarpenter tapes, I have found that the bottom lock button can be accidently released when the tape is held against the surface being measured, hence not allowing the tape to lock.
When doing woodworking, use one tape for the entire project for accuracy, and use one that works for you all the time, not just on round objects.

great for round measurments

Review Summary

Other reviews of this product are correct. It excels at measuring round stock and might be of more use to your wife in her sewing room but the quality is good and the tape itself is very accurate. The one I have broke when I accidentally dropped it so I e-mailed Fast Caps customer service at ten Pm and within ten minutes I got a response. They sent me a new one overnight. Wow! now that's customer service of the third kind! I just happened to run into the Co.
president a few weeks later as He apparently lives here in the So. Cal. area. I related this story to him and he was so impressed that he taped me on his smart phone telling of this superior customer service and sent it to his employees.

Good Tape

Review Summary

The tape is limp, but it is supposed to be so you can use it on round or even wavy items. I had to measure and cut 10 sheets of warped plywood and this tape came to the rescue. I just lay the tape down on the plywood and it conformed to the wavyness of the sheet. The lock system works fine for me and the pencil sharpener is definately a bonus as well as the little write-on surface.
