WOOD magazine review

Powerful, smooth operator with a few quirks

Review Summary

High points: Great power. Very little vibration. Large over-bed capacity plus swiveling headstock adds versatility in a small package. High-quality machining and good fit and finish. Low points: 24" capacity between centers is the shortest in the test. Price doesn’t include stand. Cumbersome speed changing requires stopping the lathe and manually moving belts (though a tension release helps). On/off switch is small and inconveniently located for quick access.
Quill screw protrudes out the rear of tailstock and gets in the way when operating handwheel. More points: Optional 24" bed extensions ($150) increase spindle-turning capacity. A benchtop tool, but made for heavy-duty work. Teknatool offers an optional metal stand ($100) and is developing a cast-iron version. Heavy motor and narrow bed mean the lathe has to be bolted to a sturdy bench or stand.
