Description

The RIKON 1216 Variable Speed Mini Lathe is a true workhorse and offers a range of features that rival the much more expensive variable speed lathes. The powerful 1/2 HP DC motor speed is controlled by selecting one of three belt pulley positions and simply turning the dial to your desired speed. Your choice of three speed ranges (300-700, 700-1500, 1500-3350) allows you to adjust for cutting, sanding, buffing and curing finish with ease.

Great little lathe!

Review Summary

I turn 75-100 pens a month and bought this lathe just for that. I also got the extension bed in case I wanted to turn anything up to 42". This lathe has all the power I need and I really like the variable speed. You still need to switch the belt between pullys to get to a different speed range and the access panel to the lower pullys is smaller than I like. If you have fat fingers, it will be very tight.
The fit and finish is good, I still had to sand the 4" tool rest to get it completely smooth. I also wish it had an indexing head, but I'll just have to make one.

Good second lathe

Review Summary

Very nice small lathe. The variable speed is pretty cool even though there are still belts to change to get to the 'range' of speeds you might want. I have a Oneway 1642 but my grandsons seem a little intimidated by the larger lathe and just love spinning wood on this one. Tool rest is less than ideal but for what I paid I think I got a great deal.
