WOOD magazine review

Lack of extension tables adds to snipe

Review Summary

High Points: ↑ Depth scale is accurate and easy to use. ↑ At 53 lbs it’s the lightest machine in our test of 11 planers. Low Points: ↓ Cut quality proved the lowest-scoring in the test. ↓ There are no infeed/outfeed tables available for this machine, making it impossible to remove snipe, which required moderate power sanding to remove. ↓ No preset thickness stops and no depth-of-cut gauge.
↓ Knife changes were the most difficult on this planer because the knives are not self-indexing. More Points: → The dust hood’s only port is 2-1⁄2", but it has a flip-open exhaust chute if you choose to not use a dust collector.

Good Planer for the money

Review Summary

I've had this planer for a number of years now and it does a great job. I like the ease of use and the simple features that it has. I'm going to mount it permanently with an infeed and outfeed table to eliminate snipe that I get from time to time. It does a great job with any wood that I've fed it. I've only had to make minor adjustments and had to replace the raising knob that broke. For the money, it's a good deal.

Ryobi AP1301 Planer - Gearbox is junk

Review Summary

I bought a Ryobi AP1301 planer a couple of years ago and used it briefly after purchase on a few boards and was pleased with results. I attempted to use it last week and it smoked on the third board and the feed rollers stopped. Bad gearbox - gearbox has a plastic gear that failed. They no longer sell the replacement gears or gearbox assembly (part number 089170101801 GEARBOX ASSEMBLY) and yet they still sell this piece of junk.
I probably planed about 20 boards with it and now it is a boat anchor. The gearbox also is not sealed so it had sawdust inside it (great for plastic gears). Steer clear of this one and buy from a manufacturer that actually makes repair parts for their products.
