Great jointer

Review Summary

Shop Fox is the retail side of Grizzly so this is the same machine of the G0490 but with a 2 year warranty. I have had this jointer for about 4 years. It has worked flawlessly. The tables and fence are flat. The fence stays put when locked down. The lever makes the table move very quickly but accurately. There is a belt slap problem at startup but if you bend open the belt guard a little bit it will go away.
Grizzly also sells a replacement pulley and flat belt that is suppose to solve the problem. Shop Fox is usually more expensive than the Grizzly version because of the 2 year warranty and dealer newtork. I got a deal on mine for less than the Grizzly so I went that route. This and the G0490 is a great jointer for the money.

Great Value in a Jointer

Review Summary

I bought the Shop Fox after trying to order a Grizzley G0490, and was told that they were out and wouldn't have any for about 3 months. I asked if they had the ShopFox 1741 and was told that they had 1 in their PA warehouse, so I ordered it. Thought it was strange that I had to ask, instead of being offered the alternative by Grizzley's customer service rep, but this review is about the tool and not their phone support.
Machine arrived in 2 large crates and I got it assembled in about 3 hours, by myself, with the help of my tractor with some forks on the front bucket. Following the very good manual included, got it together, cleaned off the protective grease, read the operating manual, and checked the table and blade alignment. Everything checked out on the money. Pleasant surprise. Started to run boards through it and was even more impressed. Performed extremely well on oak, cherry, cedar, cypress, and ash. The controls are well placed and easy to reach while working with the boards. The extra length table and the 8" capacity were such an improvement over my old PM 54A 6" jointer (which I discovered after I bought it that it was made overseas). The built in mobile base is incredible, and is far better than the PM base that was an add on to the 54A, and did not lock down securely. My only complaint with the machine is the quality of the coating (paint) being too brittle in places, causing some paint when I tightened down some bolts during assembly. This indicates either the powder coating was overbaked during production, or a chemistry issue with the powder coating itself. Should not have to be concerned about exposed metal and potential rust issues early on in the life of a large floor model tool. I still feel that this is the best value that you will find in an 8" jointer. Highly recommend it.
