Craftsman 8" Jointer

WOOD magazine rating

Cuts up to 8-1/8" boards. Powered by 2HP continuous duty, 3,450 rpm 230V single-phase motor. 9.25" x 72" work table made of heavy cast iron is precision machined with dovetail ways for smooth surface and rigidity. Easy-to-adjust tables: Infeed has a positive stop at 1/8" and outfeed at zero; both adjust to accomodate a 1/2" rabbeting ledge. Balanced cutterhead is precision machined from a single piece of alloy steel and rotates at 5,000 RPM on permanently lubricated ball bearings.

Three HSS blades, 3" diameter cutterhead provides 15,000 cuts per minute. The long 5" x 40" cast iron fence provides good support through the entire cut. Fully adjustable fence with positive stops at 90 and 45 degrees left and right. Large paddle type rocker switch with lock-out feature to prevent unauthorized use. Measures 26" x 72" x 38". All welded steel cabinet adds rigidity and reduces vibration. 4" chip chute hooks up to dust collection systems. Safety push blocks; knife and fence angle setting gauges are included.

Long fence and tables

Review Summary

This model has been discontinued by Craftsman. The Craftsman 21703 displayed power equal to the most robust machines in our test of eight 8" jointers, but its straight-knife cutterhead left a surface not as smooth as other straight-knife-equipped jointers. This machine provides one of the longest fences in the test, large handwheels for table adjustments, and a built-in "docking stand" to store push blocks.
However, we found the base-mount power switch's safety cover annoying. All told, the 21703 is a decent jointer at a premium price.
