Description

A multi-purpose tool, the Veritas medium shoulder plane can be used on end grain (e.g., trimming tenon shoulders) or for paring cross grain as is often required on tenon cheeks. It is also used for rebate work, planing along the grain. This plane is proportioned for versatility; it measures 7" long by 11/16" wide and weighs 2 lbs. If you have ever held a traditional shoulder plane, you will appreciate how this plane comes to hand. The unique lever cap with a pivoting knob adjusts to fit your hand and preferred grip. The concave knob rests in the web of your hand, allowing a secure grip without the need of a vise-like pressure. The plane is available with a lapped blade in either an A2 or O1 tool steel.

WOOD magazine review

Our favorite shoulder plane

Review Summary

Our favorite shoulder plane when we tested six models head-to-head, the Veritas Medium Shoulder Plane is moderately priced but big on performance. Near-perfect right out of the box with flat sole and square shoulders, its A2 steel blade took a brilliantly sharp edge, and its comfortable profile and unique finger hole encouraged control, which led to excellent cuts. All adjustments proved easy on this joy-to-use tool.

Excellent shoulder plane

Review Summary

Purchased this plane with the A2 blade about 6 months ago. Found the body to not require any work, gave the blade a minimal tune up. It has been my go to ever since. Excellent balance, comfortable in my hand and the blade continues to give excellent service.

Very easy to use shoulder plane

Review Summary

When I picked up this plane from Lee Valley Tools in Edmonton, I had a chance to give one a test drive at the store. Having used it for a year now, I am amazed at the comfort and ease of use this plane offers. Because it is a medium size, it is very easy to use either one handed or with both hands. Very well built, intuitive and easy to adjust it took all of 5 minutes to hone a razor edge adjust side lash and start making shavings .001 inch thick.
On maple I have been able to go as thin as .0005" thick I use this plane for all of my tune up work for fine trimming on mortise and tenon work. The A2 blade has given very good service since being purchased

Great Tool

Review Summary

I have found this shoulder plane to be the most comfortable and intuitive to hold in my hand. The design allows me to push from the back of the plane rather than from the top, as is the case with other planes of this type. Very good weight, easy to use. Extremely happy.
