Description

Based on the Record 042, which in turn was based on a Preston model. The captive-nut blade adjustment is very positive. Adjustment and Locking Screws are large and convenient. The mouth adjustment screw is captured in the toe piece and threaded into the body. Therefore it adjusts the mouth both when turned in and when turned out - unlike the original. Weight is 2.35 lbs. Blade is .002" wider than the body and is bedded at 18 degrees with a 25 degree bevel

* Body material: Ductile Iron
* Length overall: 7-3/4 in.
* Blade width: 3/4 in.
* Blade material: .140 in. thick A-2 tool steel hardened to Rockwell 60-62

WOOD magazine review

Traditional styling nets a top-notch plane

Review Summary

This plane had a flat sole and square shoulders right out of the box and needed no tuning. Some people like the grip of the rooster-tail type handle, but we find it less comfortable to use compared to other shoulder planes, especially when used one-handed. Setting the cutting depth and adjusting and locking the blade in place proved excellent, but the blade proved slightly more difficult to sharpen than a few others.

It's an LN.

Review Summary

Fit and finish typical LN. Sharp right out of the box. Classic design, but I was admiring the Veritas recently, it seems to be a more evolved shoulder plane, but this LN is outstanding. Its not cheap but you get what you pay for. It keeps my shoulders square to the tenon cheeks and flushes tenon cheeks quickly and accurately.

Excellent Plane

Review Summary

I bought this plane six months ago with the A2 blade. Out of the box I honed a small secondary bevel to 8000 grit waterstone. It is still cutting and is doing a super job on tenon shoulders and faces. I have also used it for cleaning out dadoes in red oak and white ash.
