Description

The Veritas low-angle block plane has a 12° bed angle and low cutting angle of 37° that excels at working end grain. It has high side wings, ideal for shooting, finger grips in each side for better control, and a combined blade advance and lateral adjust that is the most sensitive and accurate available. Two blade-guide screws prevent blade shifting. Its compact 6-3/8" long by 2" wide ductile cast iron body can take hard knocks, and the adjustable nosepiece does not extend past the body, avoiding unwanted blade shifts if the plane is dropped. Weighs 1-3/4 lbs and includes a lapped, 1/8" thick by 1-5/8" wide, 25° blade, in either A2 or O1 tool steel.

WOOD magazine review

Blade adjuster sets depth and angle

Review Summary

This heavy-duty low-angle block plane doesn't feel bulky, but it's beefy enough you can power through tough cuts without straining. It has the best blade depth adjuster among block planes, and it also aligns the blade side to side. The thumbwheel locks securely without any slippage. The adjustable mouth lets you close it up tight for ultrafine finishing cuts or open it up when you need to be more aggressive. Bottom line: it's effective, comfortable, and enjoyable to use.

great versatility

Review Summary

This plane has great versatility and has given me an excellent finish cut. The adjustable throat is a great idea. Very easy to adjust and the heft of the plane makes it feel very good in use. Gives an excellent finish on end grain.

Well made plane superior customer service

Review Summary

This handplane has a great feel and heft to it. Once sharpened completely cuts easily. The fit and finish are superb. The customer support from Lee Valley is awesome. When I first received my plane the box looked like someone had dropped it before it was shipped. When I opened the box I found a small ding in the edge of the plane body. I called Lee Valley to inform them about the problem, and was prepared to do a little work myself to clean up the ding.
The customer support rep told me they would have a replacement out that day, and when the new one showed up there would be a prepaid return label inside. This block plane is a lot more than the cheap Stanleys that you can purchase anywhere, when you pick it up you notice the heavy castings, precise machineing, the over all fit and finish, and the ease of the blade adjustment. For someone looking to own a block plane to do minor touch up work or someone who is interested in working unplugged I would whole heartedly recommend this plane. I have both this block plane and a Stanley contractor grade block plane, and I have relegated the Stanley to the portable toolbox, and keep this one in the shop where I use it on almost every project.
