Description

This Iron Block Plane is 6.25" long with a 1 3/8" (3.49cm) x 1/8" (3.17mm) thick blade. The body is surface ground flat and square to a tolerance of less than .001" (.0254mm), and features a moveable shoe to allow precise, easy control over the mouth opening in front of the blade. You can easily adjust the tool to suit the work being done — a very fine mouth setting for finishing work and the merest shavings, or an ample opening for rank cuts.

The bronze cap iron is large and comfortable. It is tensioned with a 1½" (3.81cm) brass spinwheel. The blade is adjusted with a captive nut for precise control with minimal backlash. Blade on the Low Angle tool is bedded at 12°, the Standard Angle at 20°. Blades are ground with a 25° flat bevel.

This tool has an appealing feel in the hand and is a pleasure to use. It is versatile, of a convenient size, and cuts with the authority of 1.5 pounds behind every stroke. Useful for every sort of woodworking job, this tool will quickly become a favorite. An ideal companion to the Low Angle Jack Plane.

WOOD magazine review

Top Tool-winning low-angle block plane

Review Summary

This is our favorite block plane in the WOOD Magazine shop, and earned the Top Tool award when tested low-angle block planes as a category. It's got the heft a block plane needs without feeling cumbersome. The blade depth adjuster works splendidly without any meaningful backlash, and although there's no later adjuster, you quickly get the feel for setting the blade and tightening the thumbwheel to lock it securely in place.

Great block plane

Review Summary

This is such a great tool. I would recommend buying Lie Nielsen planes to anybody who's looking for one, especially if your thinking about buying some cheap plane or one that needs a lot of work to restore. This one was ready to go the moment I got it, all I had to do was wipe it down -- it was even sharp! Definitely buy this plane!
