Description

The #5-1/4 was often referred to as a junior jack. At 12" long, it fell between the #4 smooth plane at 10" long and the #5 jack at 14" long. This 5-1/4W varies from the traditional 5-1/4 in various ways, but the two most significant dimensional differences are that it has a 2" wide blade (rather than 1-3/4") and the mouth is 4-3/8" back of the nose compared with 3-1/2" for the original. This extra length of sole in front of the blade makes it much easier to cut accurately because the extra-long nose makes it easier to keep the sole flush to the material at the start of a cut.

The 5-1/4W is made from ductile cast iron and has an adjustable frog with a combined feed and lateral adjust mechanism that is sturdy, yet sensitive and accurate. The easily adjusted frog is machined to fit snugly in the plane body and, combined with the 1/8" thick blade, eliminates virtually all blade chatter. Because the frog extends right through to the sole, adjusting the frog to narrow the mouth does not reduce blade support as it does in standard planes of this style. Blades are lapped, and available in your choice of A2 or O1 tool steel.

WOOD magazine review

Junior jack holds his own

Review Summary

A no. 5-1/4 jack typically is shorter and narrower than a standard no. 5, but this innovative model maintains the 2" blade width. So it has the mass and feel of a no. 5, but with better balance. And the proprietary PM-V11-steel blade (our model, 05P24.71, costs $242) held a sharp edge longer than any other jack in our test. To close up the mouth for tighter shavings, you move the entire blade-frog-and-handle assembly forward and back.
(The included instructions make this easy.) And although the Norris blade-depth adjuster proved fussy at times, setscrews near the mouth restrict side-to-side blade movement.

Veritas 5 1/4 jack plane

Review Summary

I love my jack plane. It is superior craftsmanshiP. I had the wood river jack plane first and i found it very difficult to tune and the chip breaker was NOT square to the blade. The veritas is easy to tune (all it needs is a little honing) i optwd for the VM 211 steel blade and it stays sharp for a long timE. I would rather this plane over the Lie neilson and it is $100 less
