WOOD magazine review

Low angle good for end grain

Review Summary

The low bed angle on this plane helps it cut as great on end grain—something a standard-angle jack can’t do as well—as on edge and face grain. And if you need to plane tricky figured wood, you can increase the cutting angle—normally at 42°—simply by reshaping the bevel-up blade angle 5–10° more. Plus, you can close up the mouth opening to take finer shavings and eliminate tear-out. Our model’s sole needed flattening, but once done it performed nicely.
And we didn’t care for its thick, wide tote; we’d prefer a classic Stanley design.

Good all around performer

Review Summary

I bought this thinking I would save some money over the Veritas or Lie Nielsen and it was cheaper. Not better, but cheaper. This is not to say its not a good plane because it is. The blade was surprisingly sharp out of the box, the sole very flat and the sides were at 90 degrees (which is good because this is a good plane for shooting). The aluminum cap is a bit cheap feeling but has worked OK so far. Adjustments are quick and easy. Little bad to say.
If you are on a budget and can't afford the Veritas or LN, this a plane you may not brag about to friends, but will find yourself reaching for frequently and not be disappointed.
