WOOD magazine review

Solid performer, great price

Review Summary

+Pluses: It's not flashy, but makes accurate mortises and it’s easy to use. The G0645’s rack-and-pinion fence provides smooth, quick adjustments, and we like its multiposition handle hub. A wraparound door opens wide for easy access to the chuck. The included riser block adds 1-3/4" to the 3-1/4" stroke for mortising taller stock.
Although the hold-down and chisel lock in place with setscrews, the hex wrench for the job is conveniently machined onto the end of the chuck-key handle. –Minuses: The smallish fence-adjustment knob could be bigger for easier use, and we just didn’t like the grip of the inline handle and short length of its bar.

Conflict with Wood Mag review.

Review Summary

I just received my Grizzly bench top mortiser after much anticipation. I am very disapointed and am in the process of returning the item. The fence for the mortiser has a bow in it, a slight bow, but enough to make squaring up to the table almost impossible. The set screw that holds the chisel is so lame that the chisel keeps slipping when attempting a cut and it must be made from a soft alloy as the hex portion is already rounding off. The chisels themselves are less than useless.
There is no way that they will cut red oak. I had heard about poor quality chisels from other sources but the Wood Mag review states that they are good chisels. Overall, a poor quality machine. Hence the price. I have to wonder why this machine received such a good rating unless it is because Grizzly advertises inside the front cover. Live and learn. Tim.
