WOOD magazine review

Big footprint, effective up and down stops

Review Summary

+Pluses: With the largest table in the test (14-1/4" wide by 11-1/8" deep), extension wings reaching 10" on both sides, rubber rollers for holding stock against the fence, and an adjustable stop (that attaches to the fence) for ensuring mortises are the same length, this heavyweight machine provides the best horizontal workpiece support in the test. The depth stop locks solidly, and a top stop limits upward travel.
The tool-free chisel lock is nice, but you have to fully remove one thumbscrew and loosen another on the chuck-access panel to change bits. –Minuses: For a mortiser in this price range we expected an easier-adjusting fence: There’s no rack-and-pinion mechanism, and the tall, skinny locks seem flimsy. The 22"-long handle provides great leverage, but with just four positions on the hub—only three of which prove practical—it can be wkward to use at times.

Solid and smooth.

Review Summary

I share the opinions of the editor. This is a solid smooth running machine. I have tried the 1/4 and 1/2 bits in pine, hard maple, oak and teak. It works well and cuts easily with reasonable pull on the handle. I did hone the bits upon receipt. I found it very easy to set-up with the supplied bits. No shims or dimes, etc. I can tolerate the fence set-up. The support rollers work well.
My only gripe is the small knobs for some of the adjustments. Considering how solid and smooth running this is, with the large base and extensions, it is probably well worth its higher than average price.

nice machine, although a little pricy

Review Summary

I have been searching the internet for weeks seeking others evaluations on benchtop mortisers. This seemed to be the highest rated without going over the $500.00 mark. I purchased it for $349.00 and was truly disappointed when i saw the dreaded words "made in CHINA" on the box. It is a solid machine but it is worth $100.00 more than a Shop Fox. I don't know. Very few people have these machines in stock.
There is a major flaw on the table but i probably won't do anything about it as it will not affect the operation on the unit. I will say that the knobs are very small but i have to keep telling myself it is a benchtop. My advise to you would be to LOOK AROUND. Check out the competition. It is not what i expected.
