Spade bits have there place

Review Summary

I've had this exact set of spade bits for many years and use them more frequently than I'd like to admit. Let's face it , they do have their place. They drill a decent fast hole and their inexpensive and easily sharpened. Not a bit I'd want to use in a fine woodworking application, but they can drill that hole in the back of a kitchen or bathroom cabinet very fast and fairly cleanly if you drill from both sides to avoid breakout.
You can also get these bits in a shorter length for drilling fast holes in studs for plumbing and electric wire access as well. I like these ones that have the little spur on the edges . They seem to cut a cleaner hole, but are also a little harder to sharpen. Another cool thing about these is that if you need a little smaller hole you can file the sides down to the size you need. IMO Every handy man should have at least one set of these.

Not worth the money

Review Summary

It may be my experience alone but I think others may agree, most cutting items manufactured by Irwin are not very sharp and most times come out of the package dull. I agree that spade bits are very useful, but why waste the money on something that cuts so poorly.
