WOOD magazine review

The original parallel clamp—and its younger sibling

Review Summary

When we tested parallel-jaw clamps head-to-head, Bessey had just launched a revised version of its pioneering wood-handled model. This new one had a rubber-inlaid plastic handle that was slightly bigger in length and diameter than the wood handle, and we preferred it for those reasons because we could get a better grip. But that grip did not translate into additional clamping force: Quite the opposite—the wood handles generated about 25 greater pounds per square inch of clamping force.
But the synthetic handle clamps had larger jaws mounted on identical bars, and we like that extra surface for clamping wood joints together. The jaws stayed parallel with each style, but they tended to slide easily on both when tilted vertically.

I'll stand by my original Besseys

Review Summary

I've got the original K-Body's and have had them for more than 10 years. They're my go-to clamp for projects where they fit. I just like the way they clamp my projects together. They're heavy, sure, especially when you get 8 on a big cabinet, but I'll take that any day to get their clamping ability. One problem I do have with them is getting dried glue off the bars. It gets down into the little tooth marks on top of the bar and is really tough to get off.
Otherwise, I love them. They're pricey, but that's why I bought them a couple at a time to take the sting out of it. By the way, I don't like the new K-Body's, saw them in the store and they feel cheaper. I don't like the slide-over plastic thing on the jaws.
