WOOD magazine review

Rugged compressor built to last

Review Summary

The Rolair VT20TB is a premium quality small compressor best described as a single-tank hot dog unit on a wheeled cart. Officially it’s a small compressor with a tank volume of 3.2 gallons, but the size of the cart and the weight of the unit’s heavy-duty components give it the bulk and footprint of a more robust medium-size compressor. The most notable feature is its quiet-running, low-rpm induction motor which gently purrs to life at 1,720 rpm.
Oil-splash lubrication makes the unit quieter (79 decibels) than most oil-free pump models. The large rolling stand makes it easy to move this 80-pound unit around the shop or job site, but for storing under a workbench you need to remove the handle. Attached to the stand is a steel toolbox which is largely a novelty: Though padded on the inside, anything stored in it rattles and adds noise, and it barely has room for anything more if you put a 25’ hose in there. The real problem with the box is that it sticks out far enough to hit stairs and curbs before the wheels do. This means that every time you pull it up a few stairs to move it around the shop or job, you are scraping the painted surface of the box against the concrete or wood before the wheels make contact. Both the tank and regulator gauges are situated behind a protective roll bar, which makes them difficult to read without crouching. The two quick-connect air couplers are designed for one-handed operation, and the quarter-turn ball valve used to drain the tank is much easier to open and close than a threaded stem valve. Pumping up its tank from empty to its max pressure of 125 psi takes 1 minute and 20 seconds. When the compressor drops to 95 psi, it takes 22 seconds to pump back up to 125. Overall this is a standout compressor with many high-quality features and components, and is ideal for use in a shop. It delivers plenty of air for nailing and stapling.
