Fitting sanding sleeves over drill-press sanding drums can be frustrating. We show you how to make it less stressful.

I grew tired of trying to slide tight-fitting sanding sleeves over the rubber of my drill-press sanding drums. To loosen the fit for installation, I mounted the sanding drum in my drill press with the drum loosened for changing sleeves.

Then, I laid a flat sanding block with 80-grit paper against the drum while it spun at a low speed. In only a few seconds, I took the drum diameter down just enough for the sleeve to easily slide over the loose drum. The drum still tightens firmly on the sleeve for sanding, and I don't have to struggle to change sleeves.
