When installing Shaker pegs in projects made from a soft wood, such as white pine, reinforce the peg attachments with screws. This helps to keep the pegs straight when heavy items are hung on them, preventing elongation of the peg holes and loose pegs. After gluing the pegs in a peg rail, for example, drill 332 " pilot holes 34 " deep, centered in the predrilled shank holes in the rail, into the pegs, where shown on the drawing. Then secure the pegs with #8 x 34 " flathead wood screws, as shown.
