By drilling a 116 " hole in the center channel of a combination square at the 1" mark, I can easily lay out exact, parallel pencil lines—even farther from the board's edge than possible with a typical marking gauge. The hole doesn't affect the performance of the combination square whatsoever, and gives you two tools in one.
