Foam pads ensure a good bond on slightly curved surfaces

To apply even pressure when gluing the leather pads to domed mallet faces, line your bench vise jaws with rigid-foam insulation. Spread glue on the mallet faces and apply the oversize leather pads. Position the mallet and pads between the foam. Then tighten the vise, slightly crushing the foam to make it conform to the domed surfaces.
