Glue-Residue

Before staining, wipe your project with a cloth dampened with naphtha to reveal any areas where glue still resides. Sand any problem surfaces and repeat the naphtha test. To avoid this problem altogether, try staining adjoining surfaces before initially gluing them. Mask mating joint surfaces, protecting them from stain, and apply glue to raw wood only.
