Jet Spins Out Variable Speeds

Jet will launch in March a variable-speed version of its 12-inch mini-lathe. This new lathe will be similar to Jet's current 12-inch lathe, but feature industry-leading speed ranges.

When we reviewed mini-lathes in the October 2007 issue of WOOD® magazine (#179) we recommended Jet's JWL-1220 six-speed lathe for its many great features. And we've been using it in our shop for about a year now—and we love it.

Now Jet has added a variable-speed DC motor to that lathe and will market it as the JWL-1220VS. Like its half-brother, the 1220VS will have a 3/4-hp motor, 12-inch swing over the bed, 20 inches between centers, a 1 inch x 8tpi Morse taper spindle, and 2 inches of tail center travel. The biggest difference is the speed range from 240 to 4200 rpm. Those low speeds have been unheard of in mini-lathes until now.

Other features on this lathe are an indexing spindle, self-ejecting tailstock, removable tip on the tailstock live center, 6- and 10-inch tool rests, a tool storage tray, and a 3-inch faceplate. This model will sell for $450 and should be in stores about mid-March.
