Sanding Power Tools

The first step to perfect finish is to start with a smooth, scratch-free surface. To accomplish that, you'll need to know your abrasives and sanding tools. Use the articles in this category to help you do just that.

Sander: Stationary belt (vertical) and disc sander
Purpose: Rapid removal of stock on edges.
Applications: Sanding back to a line. Touching up miters and computnd agles. Chamfering or roundig dowel ends.
Suggested Abrasives: 36- to 120-grit cloth-backed aluminum oxide.

Sander: Stationary belt (horizontal)
Purpose: Rapid removal of stock on surfaces.
Applications: Flattening small areas of face grain. General smoothing and truing. Shaping. Use end of belt as freehand drum sander.
Suggested Abrasives: 36- to 120-grit cloth-backed aluminum oxide.

Sander: Stationary edge belt sander
Purpose: Rapid removal of stock on edges.
Applications: Smoothing edge grain. Sanding back to a line. Concave sanding on the open roller.
Suggested Abrasives: 36- to 120-grit cloth-backed aluminum oxide.

Sander: Random-orbit sanders (electricand pneumatic)
Purpose: High-speed finish-sanding without swirl marks. Applications: Flattening joints while leaving a smooth surface. Special pad available for contours.
Suggested Abrasives: 80- to 320-grit paper and adhesive-backed aluminum oxide and silicon carbide.

Sander: Straightline sanders (electric and pneumatic) Purpose: Sands with the grain.
Applications: Flattening high-low areas. Lowering joints and edges to a uniform height.
Suggested Abrasives: 80- to 320-grit cloth-backed aluminum oxide and silicon carbide.

Sander: Flexible disc sander
Purpose: Rapid stock removal on irregular surfaces. Applications: Shaping, smoothing, and polishing small stock. Power-sanding bowls when chucked in a portable drill with lathe running. Various sizes available from 1-6".
Suggested Abrasives: 36- to 400-gript cloth-, paper-, and adhesive-backed aluminum oxide and silicon carbide.

Sander: Hand sander
Purpose: Controllable truing and smoothing
Applications: Specialized sanding blocks help you sand tight and irregular surfaces. Foam sanding blocks work well on rounded surfaces.
Suggested Abrasives: 80- to 1,500-grit paper-, cloth-, and adhesive-backed garnet, aluminum oxide, or silicon carbide.

Sander: Stationary strip sander
Purpose: Sanding small parts.
Applications: Metal sharpening. Inside edges and tight areas.
Suggested Abrasives: 36- to 120-grit cloth-backed aluminum oxide.

Sander: Portable belt sander
Purpose: Rapid removal of stock on large, flat surfaces. Applications: Truing stock glued up for width, lowering joints and edges to a uniform height. Mounted in accessory stands, these machines work as small stationary beltsanders. Suggested Abrasives: 60- to 120-grit cloth-backed aluminumoxide.

Sander: Finishing sanders
Purpose: Smoothing surfaces and protective finishes. Applications: Final sanding. 1/4 sheet (palm) sanders useful on small areas. 1/3- and 1/2-sheet models best for largerareas.
Suggested Abrasives: 120- to 320-grit paper-backed aluminum oxide, garnet, or silicon carbide.

Sander: Flap wheels
Purpose: Conform to irregular surfaces.
Applications: Corrosion removal on tools and hardware. Sanding carvings and spindles.
Suggested Abrasives: 60- to 180-grit cloth-backed aluminum oxide.

Sander: Drum sander
Purpose: Sanding concave and convex edges to smooth, flowing shapes.
Applications: Sanding back to a line on curved, bandsawed edges.
Suggested Abrasives: 60- to 150-grit cardboard-backed aluminum oxide.

Sander: Pneumatic (inflatable) drum sander
Purpose: Smoothing and shaping of irregular surfaces. Applications: Smoothing carvings and intarsia parts. Fill drum bladder to varying pressures to change conformity of drum.
Suggested Abrasives: 36- to 120-grit cloth-backed aluminum oxide.
