Cut perfect grooves & rabbets without a dado set

First, cut a spacer

1. From a scrap of the stock you want to fit into the groove, carefully rip exactly a blade's thickness from one face. Make the cut about 1" deep, as shown.

@rose_doug: No, there isn't. Quite a lot of table saws out there(you know, the cheap ones that sell the most) can't handle dado blades, and this is the only other option without switching to using the router.
