I've been using this tip for years. With the proper hold-downs you can achieve results that rival most dado sets. With problem materials I under cut the dado and clean up with a router. All this is easier for me than the dado set.

If you can't use some of these ideas, keepin mind that others might and the book wasn't written just for you so don't discourage them.
