Here's a quick-and-easy dust-collection blast gate

Here's a dust-collection blast gate you can build quickly and easily without spending much money. First, cut all the pieces from 1/4" Baltic-birch plywood and bore the 4 1/2" holes, as shown, with a circle cutter. Then, glue and clamp the plywood spacers to one of the 7x7" plywood pieces. Now, cut a 4" section of PVC cold-water drain coupling in half and epoxy the coupling halves in the 4 1/2" holes, flush with the inside surface of the plywood.

When the glue and epoxy cure completely, assemble the two halves of the blast gate with glue and brads. Now, slide the gate into the gate housing and connect your dust-collection piping to the PVC couplings.

Since I am bad about leaving blast gates open in my ex-airplane hanger come woodshop, I've just finished hanging flags (red streamers) on the closed position ends of each gate, so that I can see their condition from a distance.

I screwed the two housing plate assemblies together so that they can be disassembled for maintenance, repair, and/or modification, if needed. Attaching a stop block at the proper location makes full open positioning of the gate easier and quicker.

I see how you made your shear valves & that's what they are. Anyways, Epoxy doesn't work to good on wood & PVC for any length of time. For items of high use like this, I made my shear valves out of 4 1/2" round duct. And, flat sheet metal.

If you drill a small hole in the corners of the sealed end of the plastic gates, it allows a little air flow from those corners and helps prevent dust accumulating there.

Hey all. Its certainly entertaining to read the humorous bantering on some of comments... My nickel's worth. I have the premade plastic blast gates and find that their design allows for debris to be captured in the corners of the seeled end, keeping the gates froms closing all the way. Cleaning them is quite a hassle. The design above looks like it eliminates that problem, so I will be making on to replace my most notable problem and see if its worth it.
