Amber Jean

Born in Wyoming and raised in Montana, Amber Jean's work is infused with her connection to and appreciation of the West yet reflects influences from her formal art education in both Europe and America. Her unique approach to wood combines the use of intricate carved detail, rich color, and intense creativity. She first appeared in the media at age six when she took first place in a national drawing competition. Years later while in high school, her artwork was selected to represent talented youth, and was displayed both in the rotunda of Montana's capitol and at our nation's capitol in Washington DC. Trusting her talents, Amber left Montana at the age of seventeen for Europe. While in Germany, she showed her portfolio to the director of the Bremer Kunstshule and was asked to be a guest student. She found herself most intrigued by the incredible carvings and sculptures she saw outside the classroom. Returning to America after a year abroad, Amber received many awards and scholarships that fueled her studies at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and Montana State University.

Established as a leader in western design, Amber has brought her fine art to furniture. A carved bed she created for WDC 1999 "took both breath and awards away" according to a feature written by Elizabeth Clair Flood for Cowboys and Indians magazine. She feels passionate about creating memorable sculpted furniture and considers it a compliment when people respond emotionally to her works. "Trees inspire me... especially juniper. Juniper is sculpted by extreme climates reflecting the twists and turns of life. Sanding juniper is like polishing stone; the discovery of brilliant color beneath the weathered rough exterior is a gift of nature. The trick is to use the found elements with the thoughts, stories, emotions and imagery of my carving. When carving, power tools help me remove wood quickly but it is during the long hours of intense hand carving that the magic happens and wood comes alive."

Realistically carved images in rich, vibrant colors

Amber Jean has received national notoriety for her beautifully crafted wooden sculptures and functional art furniture. Her work has been featured in several magazines and many books. Amber Jean's images are realistically carved in deep relief. She mixes her own stains and layers them to achieve the translucent rich color characteristic of many of her carvings. Her use of color and her ability to incorporate various materials into her carvings set her woodworking apart as especially unique. Home is a cozy cabin at the end of a road near the top of a mountain in Paradise Valley, Montana. I live a "storied" life not unlike a quirky, comic imaginative movie.

Sharing her success story Amber Jean has been in various TV, radio, and print appearances. She continues to find solace and inspiration by living in the woods, and travels widely to meet with clients about commissioned works. She slips in outdoor adventures between business trips and working in her studio.
