Meet one of America's top scrollers and his world-class scrollsaw collection.

Rick Hutcheson, Scrollsaw Expert

At a young age Rick Hutcheson learned a great deal about carpentry work from his grandfather. After a hiatus, Rick returned to woodworking in 1980, first making small craft items on a bandsaw. Over time the size and detail of each piece became smaller and more intricate. In 1989 with the purchase of a scrollsaw this work became a full-time job.

In 1993 Rick wrote his first article on tricks and techniques for WOOD Magazine. A subsequent article in 2001 referred to him as the "Scrollsaw Expert." This success also allowed for numerous article publications in scrollsaw specific magazines. The involvement with these publications allowed for increased exposure and an opportunity to share his knowledge with other scrollsaw enthusiasts.

For a period of time Rick was the prototype tester for Delta on the Q3 model scrollsaw. This was one of his most memorable projects. The reward of testing and implementing new design elements was truly remarkable. When the saw hit the market it featured top mounted controls that paved the way for future industry designs.

Production scrolling became Rick's passion

Production scrolling became Rick's passion

While working with Meredith Corporation and WOOD Magazine, Rick became the cut-wood supplier for many of their crafting publications. This became one of the largest operations one could dream of, with over 300 multi-piece ornaments being cut daily for numerous publications. It was in completing these daily orders that Rick developed a scrollsaw speed averaging three to four times the normal craftsman.

Rick's own website about scrollsawing offers free videos, reviews, tips, and technical articles on maintenance and repair. Having purchased old 19th century catalogs on scrollsaw patterns, he has over 2000 full size Victorian patterns available online. Information is offered for anyone interested in working with scrollsaws, and there is a section of the website dedicated to the 200 antique saws in his personal collection. Rick enjoy passing along everything he has learned from this craft to other interested individuals.

Rick's passion is summed up in his own words, "After all this time, I believe my biggest problem is knowing when I am cutting for work and when I am cutting for pleasure."
