I get quite a lot of my wood from wooden pallets. You have to make sure that all of the nails are removed. You can then run it through a planer and clean it up. Nail holes can then be repaired and the wood is as good as new!

I've made some of my own lumber using an Alaskan chainsaw mill. I have a small wooded property in Northern Michigan and got tired of burning in in the fire pit. I've also bought lumber from an Amish mill work shop about 20 minutes from my house. It's more work to joint and plane the rough stuff, but in my opinion, much more satisfying in the end. (not to mention cheaper)
