Idea Shop 3

The emphasis in this 12x16' basement shop was to squeeze in all the tools and machines needed for a complete workshop and still provide room to move around. Can you imagine how crowded the space would be if all the machines were on separate stands? The other challenge was to take care of the dust as quietly as possible.

How many woodworkers do their woodworking in a basement shop? Plenty. But even if that's not where your shop is, you'll find all kinds of small-space solutions in the 12x16' room we call IDEA SHOP 3 that started appearing in issue 100, November 1997 of WOOD magazine. No doubt you'll want to adapt many of these projects and ideas to your home workshop. Click on the numbered items at right to take a tour and discover how we took a basement shop and outfitted it into the feature-filled shop shown here. At the end of each description, we've noted the issue that the particular project was featured in. And, many of these projects are now featured as downloads available through our WOOD Store. For projects that won't find their way into the magazine, no issue reference will appear.

For Additional Shops

1. Tablesaw Cabinet 2. Sanding-Table Extension 3. Jointer Cabinet 4. Blade Guard With Vacuum Attachment 5. Mobile Tool Base

Centered in the middle of our shop is a 10'' tablesaw with a custom base (1), outfeed table and extension table (2) that doubles as a sanding table. Holes in the top of the extension/sanding table lead to an air-tight collection box fitted with a 4" dust-collection port. In addition, the tablesaw cabinet as well as the jointer cabinet (3) sit in our mobile tool bases (5). For small cleanup jobs, a portable shop vacuum fits nicely under the sanding-table extension. The tablesaw cabinet, outfeed table, and sanding extension table all appeared in issue 106, June 1998 of WOOD. The blade guard with vacuum attachment appeared in issue 107, August 1998.

This one project was responsible forgetting me wholly involved into woodworking. These are the best ever, in fact this whole Idea Shop 3 series is absolutely the best. I still build these every time I add a somewhat stationary tool to my shop.
