A student of photography and architecture, John Lucas has turned his love for aesthetics into his gallery-quality turnings. John is also the woodturning forum host at WOOD Online.
John Lucas, The Artful Turner
John Lucas has been playing in wood for 35 years and turning for more than 25. He started woodworking as a hobby, making odds and ends for an apartment while going to school for a degree in Physical Education. Buying a Shopsmith after college, he put together a fairly complete workshop in the back room of a two-bedroom apartment. Amazingly, the neighbors put up with all the noise. Some sort of woodworking area has been present ever since.
Eventually, John began working as a full time photographer for Tennessee Tech University. This allowed for a close working relationship with the Appalachian Center for Crafts, which he credits for the level of his woodworking today. The instructors and students produced a high level of work that provided inspiration and information. It was there that John was also introduced to the American Association of Woodturners, along with the Tennessee Association of Woodturners.
