As the Tools Editor for WOOD Magazine, I always get a kick out of what goes on at a Grizzly Industrial tent sale. This past weekend I attended the backlot sale at Grizzly’s showroom in Springfield, Missouri. Since it’s just 300 miles south of our office in Des Moines, I rented a car and made the leisurely drive through the heart of Missouri on mostly two-lane highways.
Never heard of Grizzly’s tent sales? Or never had the chance to attend one? Here’s the lowdown. Grizzly holds four of these events throughout the summer, setting up tents in the parking lots behind their showrooms in Muncy, Pennsylvania (twice), Bellingham, Washington, and Springfield. Here they put up for discounted sale any tools or accessories that have been damaged, retired, obsoleted, used as a demo, or simply needing repairs of varying degrees. There’s some great deals, and then there’s some unique fixer-uppers. For those who need parts for repairs, Grizzly’s parts department is there in force to provide what’s needed to get tools back in business.
Waiting at the front of the line…
…and around the corner of the massive showroom.
Finally, the gates open and the rush ensues!
It’s interesting to watch what customers go for. The woodworking tools and products overwhelmingly outsell the metalworking stuff, and among the woodworking tools the tablesaws, jointers, planers, and dust collectors seemed to go the quickest. There were about a dozen laminated-maple benchtops that sold very quickly. And, although I forgot to get pictures of this, DeWalt and Porter-Cable, as well as several smaller vendors, were there selling new products at significant discounts.
